Vera Campbell

March 13, 1923 — November 23, 2016

Vera Smith Lewis Campbell was born on March 13, 1923 in Clayton, Mississippi to the parents of Willie and Beatrice Smith. Her parents, step-father, two sisters, and two husbands preceded her in death.
Vera was reared in Kansas City, Mo. during the Great Depression and often reminisced about taking the bus to 31st and Troost to window shop. She attended the Kansas City, Mo public schools and graduated from Lincoln High School. After graduation, she continued her love for learning by choosing to pursue a higher education at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama, graduating with a degree in Nursing. She later married Fred Lewis. This marriage ended in divorce. Later, she married Roosevelt Campbell and they moved to Los Angeles, California. This marriage was also later dissolved.
Earlier she had united with the Highland Avenue Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member, singing in the choir, until someone told her about the 7th day Sabbath and that Sunday was not the Bible Sabbath nor the Sabbath of the Lord our God. After praying and studying, she united with the Seventh Day Adventists Church at 13th and Euclid, which later became he Linwood Boulevard Seventh-Day Adventists Temple, where she had a strong Christian faith throughout her life, reading the Bible, studying the Sabbath School Lessons, Devotional Books and praying for others regularly; praying with eight people every evening, some that lived in Kansas City and others all over.
Vera immersed herself in providing spiritual growth. She was an active member of the Seventh-Day Adventists Church and awesome Colporteur and Literature Evangelist; vigorously and faithfully passing out pamphlets, tracks and the distribution of Religious Books. Her favorite saying was, “I am going to make your day,” and hand a track to everyone she met.
Survivors include two brothers: Eugene Brown (Gwendolyn) of Southfield, Michigan, and Samuel Brown of Detroit, Michigan; one sister, Dersie Reed of Tunica, Mississippi; cousins: Rev. Kenneth Ray (Frances), D.J. Gilmore, Jr., Geneva Robinson (Bert), Richard Gilmore, Melvin Gilmore, and Shirley Gilmore, all of Kansas City, Mo., and a host of church members, neighbors, and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 2, 2016 at 11:00 am, with a visitation beginning at 10:00 am, all at Linwood Boulevard Seventh-Day Adventists Temple, 4300 E. Linwood Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64128. Interment will follow services in Forest Hill Cemetery, Kansas City, MO.
