Obituary

Charlene Frances Wenig, a longtime resident of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, passed away on August 12, 2026, in Overland Park, Kansas. She was 96 years old.

Charlene was born on December 31, 1929, in Warsaw, Missouri, to Carl and Beulah (Neas) Moor. Over the course of her long and full life, Charlene built a career in real estate that spanned more than 50 years. As a real estate broker, she had the opportunity to meet countless people, and with Charlene’s cheerful and friendly nature, she never knew a stranger. She carried a simple belief throughout her career: “I always believed everybody deserved a house.” It was a sentiment that reflected not only her dedication to her profession, but also her genuine care for others.

Outside of her career, Charlene found great joy in square dancing and was involved with numerous square-dancing clubs throughout the years. She also enjoyed being a member of a garden club and appreciated the beauty and fellowship it brought into her life.

Her Lutheran faith was an important part of Charlene’s life. She was a member of the Lutheran Church and valued giving her children a faith-centered education, sending them to Lutheran school as they grew up.

Charlene was also an enthusiastic baseball fan and especially loved cheering on the Kansas City Royals. She kept an interest in the game throughout her life and could often be heard asking those around her, “Who’s winning?”

Above all, Charlene will be remembered for her cheerful spirit, her friendliness, and the ease with which she welcomed people into her life. Whether through her work, her church, the dance floor, or simply a friendly conversation, Charlene had a way of connecting with those around her.

Charlene was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Beulah Moor; her beloved husband, Kermit Wenig; and her daughter, Patricia Broadstone.

She is survived by her son, David Wenig and his wife, Jackie; her grandchildren, Emma Fortner, Angela Lewis, and Jonathan Broadstone; her cousins, Peggy Moor and Ray LaBon; many great-grandchildren; and other extended family and friends who will cherish her memory.

Charlene will be laid to rest beside her husband, Kermit, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Benton County, Missouri.

After a life of welcoming others, helping families find a place to call their own, and never meeting a stranger, Charlene leaves behind a legacy of kindness, faith, friendship, and a life well lived.
