John Hughey

John Arthur Hughey, age 77, passed away in Kansas City,  on Saturday, March 2nd, 2019 where he was loved and adored by many.

He was born on January 1, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee to Polly and Chester Hughey. John attended Whitehaven High School before joining the Air Force. On May 5th, 1963, he married LaVerna Violet Nelson. They were married for 52 years before she passed away. Together, they had 2 daughters: Rhonda (Mathieson) and Renae (Roche). After serving 12 years in the Air Force, John, LaVerna and daughters settled down in North Dakota where John worked at the North Dakota School for the Deaf for 28 years. They were active members in their local church. John was involved in the School Board and enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting. John served several years on the school board, was a member of the Lions Club and volunteered along with LaVerna at the Salvation Army.  When John retired, he and LaVerna moved to Kansas City in 2001 to be closer to their daughters. They enjoyed many years with their family, their church, working in their yard and gardening. John was a servant with a sweet nature and kind heart.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, LaVerna; his brothers: Lyn, Ronnie, James and Tony; and granddaughter, Elizabeth. He is survived by sisters: Shirley Lavigne, Patsy DePriest and Sandra Houston; his 2 daughters: Rhonda Mathisen (Tommy), daughters: Malin, Madelen, Frida and Maya; and Renae Roche (Joe), their two sons: Jackson and Josiah, daughters: Tiffany (Fitzwater) and Annie (DeVol) and 8 great grandchildren; and many wonderful nieces and nephews and in-laws.

A family graveside service will be held on Saturday April 27th at 2 p.m. at Longview Cemetery in Kansas City, MO.
