Karel Vladimir Sipek, 85, passed away peacefully at his home on March 8, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Karel was born on February 10, 1941, in Mladá Boleslav, Czechoslovakia, to Karel Sipek and Bozena Sipkova. During his high school years, he met the love of his life, Vilma. The two began dating at the young ages of 14 and 16, beginning a love story that would span a lifetime.
As a young man, Karel served in the Czech Army. During that time, he and Vilma kept their love strong by writing letters and visiting whenever they could. They were married on December 22, 1962, beginning a marriage that would last more than six decades.
Seeking freedom and a better life for their young family, Karel and Vilma bravely escaped communist Czechoslovakia with their two small children and immigrated to the United States in 1969. It was a country Karel deeply loved and proudly called home. He was a true American patriot who never lost appreciation for the freedoms he found here. His courageous journey to freedom became the foundation for the life and opportunities his family enjoys today.
Karel worked for many years at Hallmark Cards before retiring. Throughout his life, he was an extraordinary photographer with a natural gift for capturing life’s quiet beauty through his camera lens. He found great joy in nature and could often be found working in his garden, reading on his deck in the sunshine, windsurfing, or exploring the outdoors with his camera in hand.
Above all else, Karel loved his family deeply and cherished every moment spent with them.
Karel was preceded in death by his parents, Karel Sipek and Bozena Sipkova.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Vilma Sipek; his children, Martin Sipek (Christy), Pavlina Schiavi (Joseph), and Susan Hupman (Johnny). He was a proud grandfather to Nicholas (Brea), Christal (Travis), Adrian, Alexander, and Andrea, and a cherished great-grandfather to Owen, Jaxon, Haiden, Braidyn, Olivia, and Jacob.
Karel is also survived by his sister, Bozena Jirinec (Vladimir), and his niece and nephew, Klara and Vlad.
Karel’s life was defined by courage, devotion to family, love of freedom, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of the world around him. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, kind heart, and the many memories he captured through both his camera and the lives he touched.
A memorial service will be held on March 14, 2026, at Longview Funeral Home & Cemetery at 12700 SE Raytown Rd, Kansas City, MO. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m.
May his memory be a blessing, and may the light he captured in the world continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
