Obituary

Karen Lee Olson, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished member of the Kansas City community, passed away on June 4, 2026, in her hometown of Kansas City, Missouri. Born on July 5, 1946, Karen’s life was marked by kindness, humor, and creativity— traits that endeared her to all who knew her.

Karen’s journey began in Kansas City, Missouri, where she was born to Kenneth James Netherton and Mary Fran Grabner. Though her parents have since passed, the legacy of love and warmth they imparted lived on profoundly in Karen's life. She was united in marriage to Gregory Lee Olson on August 3, 1973, a partnership that blossomed from their first meeting at the Solo Cup Company. Together, for over five decades, they built a life filled with companionship, adventure, and cherished memories.

Her career spanned many years and milestones. Karen devoted 35 years to the Solo Cup Company in Grandview, starting out as a cup packer and working her way up to become a Chief Inspector—a testament to her dedication and work ethic. Following this, she took on the role of Supervisor at Promail Services, a fulfillment center renowned for shipping products worldwide. Karen’s professional journey reflected her tenacity, precision, and leadership, qualities that resonated deeply with colleagues and friends alike.

Karen and Greg’s shared love for exploration took them across continents and seas. An unforgettable trip to Hawaii, gifted by the Solo Cup Company, saw them explore five islands over three weeks. Their adventures extended to New Zealand and Sydney, Australia, where they marveled at the vibrant life of the Great Barrier Reef. For their 30th wedding anniversary, they embarked on a breathtaking Alaskan cruise and land tour, savoring nature’s grandeur and cementing memories to treasure forever.

At home, Karen found joy in the simple pleasures and unique hobbies that brought smiles to those around her. Known for her creative spirit, she delighted in dressing up a three-foot statue of a man in festive holiday outfits, a quirky tradition that captured her playful essence. Karen was also a huge fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. After spending 29 years nurturing a home in Grandview, she and Greg moved to Raymore to be closer to their son Jeffrey and his wife Kimberly, and most importantly, their beloved grandchildren, Cody and Cassidy—a family circle that brought her immense pride and happiness.

Karen's vibrant personality filled rooms with laughter and warmth. She was kind and funny, always ready to brighten someone’s day with a thoughtful word or a joke. Her commitment to family and friends was unwavering, a constant source of comfort and strength.

The community will gather to honor Karen’s remarkable life with a visitation on June 11, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at Longview Funeral Home, located at 12700 SE Raytown Rd,

Kansas City, MO 64149. Her funeral service will follow on June 12 at 11:00 a.m., with burial taking place at Longview Cemetery shortly after, at 12:00 p.m.

Karen Lee Olson’s legacy is one of enduring love, unshakeable spirit, and a life fully lived. She is proceeded in death with her parents, Kenneth and Fran, and her sister Pat.

She leaves behind her devoted husband Greg Olson; their son, Jeffrey Roper, and daughter in-law Kimberly; and treasured grandchildren Cody and Cassidy. The family finds solace in the memories they shared with Karen and in the profound impact she made on their hearts.

As we say goodbye, we remember Karen not only for the remarkable woman she was but for the gentle kindness and joy she brought into every life she touched. Her spirit will live on, a shining light guiding her family and friends always.
