Born in Canton, China on November 19, 1948, Kevin moved to British Hong Kong when he was 5 years old and was raised there by both of his parents. During elementary school, a British schoolteacher gave him the English name of Kevin, which is the name he ended up using for the rest of his life. He was a very diligent student, graduated at the top of his engineering class and earned a gold medal in civil engineering. After graduation from college, he moved to the US with his family and it was in the US that he met Shirley Choc. They eventually settled in San Francisco, CA where they got married in 1980 and had a son, Jeffrey K. Ma, a year later.
Kevin worked as a civil engineer for Parsons Corporation in San Francisco, CA for 35 years until he retired in 2015. As a civil engineer he worked on projects such as expansion of the San Francisco International Airport and the BART system, which is the subway system of the San Francisco Bay Area. After retirement, he moved to Kansas City, MO along with his wife to be closer to his son Jeffrey.
