LaVerna V. Hughey, 72, Kansas City, Mo., previously of Devils Lake, passed away Thursday, Oct. 30, 2014. LaVerna was surrounded by her family who loved her very much.
LaVerna was born to Oliver and Clara Nelson March 16, 1942, in Flaxton. She attended school in Flaxton. After graduation she moved to Montana where she met her husband John who was stationed there with the Air Force. After living in numerous locations with the Air Force, they settled in Devils Lake. While there, LaVerna worked for the Haugland & Heustis Law Firm, Ramsey National Bank, the Lake Region Human Service Center and served the Salvation Army. She was also very involved in the Westminster Presbyterian Church there. LaVerna's faith was an important part of her life and how she reared her family. In 2001, they moved to Kansas City to be close to their daughter, Rhonda Hughey, and were soon joined by their other daughter, Renae, who moved to the city and married Joe Roche. John and LaVerna attended Colonial Presbyterian church in Kansas City.
LaVerna's greatest joy was her family and her home and spending time in her garden. John and LaVerna recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary. LaVerna's faith was strong and real and impacted all those around her. Spending eternity with Jesus was her constant hope.
LaVerna is preceded in death by: her parents, Oliver and Clara Nelson and her brother, Kenny Nelson.
She is survived by: her husband, John; her daughters, Rhonda Hughey and Renae Roche (Joe); grandchildren: Tiffani, Annie, Jackson, and Josiah; and her sister, Beverly Moberg. Memorial Service will be 11:00am Friday, November 7, 2014. Visitation 10 – 11 at the funeral home.
