Patricia Mahoney

August 4, 1946 — July 25, 2020

Patricia Ann Hayes Mahoney of Kansas City, Mo., passed away on July 25, 2020—just shy of her 74th birthday.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 7 at Longview Funeral Home and Cemetery.

Born on Aug. 4, 1946 to Adele Cecelia Hayes and Patrick Cornelius Hayes in Cleveland, Ohio, Patty was the proud mother of four children, six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. She often said her family was her greatest accomplishment in life.

Let it be known that this memorial will never give Patty the justice she deserves. If she had written it herself, you would be on the floor laughing by now because of her over-the-top humor and clever wit. Conversely, you would eventually find yourself deeply moved, catching a glimpse of her gentle and spiritual side—one that was seldom shared in conversation, but was always expressed in her writing.

But alas, she left this writing challenge to her daughter—a challenge she undoubtedly had full confidence would be completed with grace—because right or wrong, Patty genuinely believed her children were capable of absolutely anything. That maternal pride was one of her most endearing qualities.

Incredibly hardworking, creative, and always inventive (think “MacGyver”); a lover of flowers, gardening, elephants, the Kansas City Chiefs, and all things Irish; Patty will be remembered most for her unwavering strength.

As a single mother and sole-provider, Patty worked nights in a plastic factory to make ends meet. She was always the first to sign up to work overtime and holidays—no matter how exhausted she was. After seriously injuring her arm in the factory, Patty went on to become a floral arranger and greatly enjoyed expressing her creative side, and then later studied to become an optician, a profession she took great pride in until her retirement.

Patty overcame many health challenges including kidney cancer, and remarkably persevered with advanced COPD for more than a decade. Even while struggling to breathe and barely able to walk, she always managed to smile and laugh through the pain. She genuinely loved life.

Patty was an inspiring force, a free spirit, and a woman of God. Her infectious smile will be missed by so many, but those close to her can find comfort in knowing that she is free from pain and joyfully reunited with her son, Marty, as well as her parents.

Survivors include her sister, Peggy; daughters, Renee (Brian), Tiffany, and Kelly; nieces, Jennifer, Janelle, and Julianne; five grandchildren, Abby, Joseph, Rachel, Hope, Amber, and Emalee; and great grandchildren, Isaih, Malachi, and Camila.
