Rachel C. Chrisman, of Lee’s Summit, MO, a woman of quiet elegance and a devoted wife, mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025, at age 90.
Born on August 23, 1934, in Smithville, MO, to Scott and LaMera Lowman, Rachel graduated from Smithville High School and then continued her education at William Jewell College, where she graduated with a degree in elementary education, later receiving a Master’s Degree from University of Missouri-Kansas City.
In 1956, Rachel married George Chrisman, who remained her devoted husband for 67 years, until his passing in 2023.
Rachel dedicated her life to education and literacy. She taught third grade in the Hickman Mills School District from 1966 to 1989 and was later an instructor at Avila University. Post-retirement, she dedicated 20 years as a volunteer at Truman Medical Center, reading to elderly patients and assisting with fundraising. Rachel became interested in the oral tradition of storytelling; she studied its culture and history, learned many traditional and modern stories, and performed them for friends and various organizations.
Rachel and George were active members of Broadview Christian Church and later Community Christian Church. They also actively enjoyed the Kansas City music, theater, and arts scene.
Preceded in death by her parents and her sister Rebecca Wohlford, Rachel is survived by her brother, George Lowman; her children Marty Christy, Scott (Julie) Chrisman, George Chrisman, and Aaron (Michelle) Chrisman; 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers please make contributions to Grandview Education Foundation in the name of Rachel Chrisman to the Bill Brady Visual Art Fund.
Services will be Friday, May 30th, 2025, at 1:00 pm, followed by the interment of George and Rachel Chrisman and reception until 4:00 pm, at Longview Funeral Home and Cemetery, 12700 Raytown Rd, Kansas City, MO 64149.
