Mr. Renfro Oswald

April 13, 1921 — February 22, 2008

Renfro G. Oswald best known as ?Ozzie? to friends and ?Uncle Ren? to family, passed away Friday, the 22nd of February. Born April 13, 1921 in Reading, PA to Ralph Grill Oswald and Gertrude (Garrison), he was later raised by Minnie (Heater) and Ralph Oswald, in Middletown, NY. He enlisted in the Regular Army in 1940 and was assigned to the Army Air Corps and later served in the Military Police. In 1944 (WWII), he was a courier between England and France for General Eisenhower, carrying top-secret documents. In 1945 he was with the first troops to enter and occupy Heidelberg, Germany. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1953 and was assigned to a special weapons project at Kirtland AFB. He met Julia ?Pat? (Mehen) in Washington D.C. in 1957 and they were united in marriage on Nov. 1, 1958. He later retired at his last duty station, Richards-Gebaur AFB in 1962 as a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Supervisor. He worked the next 20 years as a operating engineer for Western Electric (Lucent Technologies) in Lee?s Summit, MO. Residing in Grandview, MO for the past 46 years, Ozzie was a devoted husband and father. He had many interests, projects, and hobbies. He enjoyed traveling, being a FL/TX snow bird, camping, mountain biking, fishing, flower, vegetable, and water gardening. He participated in the MS-150 in 1990, ?91, and ?93 in his early seventies and continued bike-riding on the trails at Longview Lake. He was the kind of neighbor everyone wanted-a neighborhood watcher and a Mr. Fix It. Ozzie was also a mentor and role model for numerous young men through the years sharing his gift of listening, wisdom, humor, sense of adventure, and love.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by Pat, his wife of 49 years, and daughter Julie Oswald of Raymore, MO; siblings Alfred (Eva) of Lexington, KY; Betty Turner (Pete) of Flint, MI; Sally Ruiz (Luis) of Hudson, FL. He also leaves behind a cousin Beatrice Sharpsteen of Clearwater, FL, numerous nephews and nieces, and many friends of all ages.
