Richard James McCormick, born on October 9, 1943, in Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on December 15, 2023. He was a loving father, doting grandfather, dedicated law enforcement professional, and a talented musician. Richard's life was filled with compassion, hard work, and a great sense of humor that brought joy to those around him.

Richard began his journey by attending Christ the King grade school and later graduated from Center High School in 1962. Following his graduation, he served his country as part of the Army from 1966 to 1968. Always seeking to make a difference in people's lives, Richard then joined the Kansas City Police Crime Lab in 1968 and worked tirelessly until his retirement in 2002.

Beyond his dedication to law enforcement, Richard had a passion for music. Throughout his life, he played the bass guitar in several bands that left an indelible mark on the local music scene. In the early '60s, he rocked with the Twiliters and continued his musical journey with Changing Times in the 1980s. In the '90s, he graced stages with Amarillo & Shades of Country. His talent as a bassist was undeniable and brought joy to countless listeners.

Aside from music and crime scene analysis, Richard had a myriad of hobbies and interests that showcased his love for life. He was an enthusiastic BBQ enthusiast known for his mouth-watering smoked meats. Additionally, Richard found solace in fishing and spent many blissful hours at peace on the water. He also enjoyed watching westerns and appreciated their unique storytelling.

One of Richard's proudest accomplishments was conquering Mount Saint Helens in 1969. This feat reflected his determination and will to overcome challenges. It is emblematic of his character as someone who never shied away from tackling obstacles head-on. His determination developed from his strong faith, and he used that love and faithful spirit in the strength and love he showed and instilled in his daughters growing up.


Richard will be remembered not only for his professional achievements and hobbies but also for his unwavering devotion to his family and friends. He was a beloved father to his daughters, Carrie Bumgarner (Michael) and Kimberly Wilson. Richard cherished the time spent with his grandchildren, Jenna, Jordan, Marlo, and Chloe, who affectionately called him Papa. His children and grandchildren were a source of immense pride and joy in his life.

Richard's presence will be deeply missed by his surviving brother, John McCormick (Rita), as well as his brothers Tim McCormick and Michael McCormick (Connie). He brought warmth and love into the lives of his nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Richard's kind heart, selflessness, and amazing sense of humor touched the lives of all who knew him. He was always there for his family, providing unwavering support. The memories created with Richard will forever be cherished in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents John Vincent McCormick and Florence Marie (Henkel) McCormick, brother Tom McCormick, sisters Delia "Dee" Allen, and Mary Mallory. 

To honor Richard's memory, visitation services will be held at Longview Funeral Home in Kansas City on January 27, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A memorial service will follow from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the same location. The address is 12700 SE Raytown Rd, Kansas City, MO 64149.
