Robert Newman

July 18, 1923 — September 11, 2007

Robert D. Newman, "R.D.", born July 18 1923 in Independence Missouri, died September 11 2007 in his home of 28 years from natural causes. He is survived by his older sister, Mosselene, six children, 11 grandchildren, nieces and nephews and dear friends.

"R.D." graduated from Northeast High school and relished his participation in ROTC. He volunteered for military duty having pestered his parents until they signed a permission letter, as R.D. was under aged. He entered the Army Air Corps pilot training program and graduated from the Santa Anna flight school serving in the Pacific theatre as a P-38 fighter pilot. Like many veterans, he was modest and quietly proud of his service to his country.

After World War II, he returned to the Kansas City Mo. area and graduated from William Jewel College. He moved to Chicago to attend Northwestern Law School but fate intervened and he found his real calling in business. He invested in a marketing company with his roommate and although it ultimately proved less than successful, "R.D." discovered "sales". He was a "natural" and throughout his life was proud to call himself a "peddler" - a harking back to an old term that exhibited his fondness for tradition.

He returned to Kansas City and married Mary Etta Griswold, the daughter of his Boy Scout Troop leader. Their marriage of 58 years survived and flourished during both difficult and happy times growing two principal businesses, a manufacturer's representative company - Sales Producers Inc. and a manufacturing company now called Mr. LongArm Inc. His beloved wife Mary Etta "Mimi", passed away on August 7, 2006.

R.D.'s love of flying continued and he piloted his Bonanza airplane to make sales calls for both businesses for many years. R.D. was on the road selling much of the time to provide for his growing family, so the family vacations were a very important time together. It seemed every national park in the western US was visited and hilarious stories abound.

A generous father and loving husband, he found time to attend boys and girls baseball, school plays, and summer camps. He loved animals and shared an enthusiasm for dancing and music with Mimi. He was a proud member of the Boy Scout related Tribe of Micosay and was given the Warrior name of Far Flying Falcon.

A hunter, avid reader, inventor, entrepreneur, world traveler, patriot and visionary, he loved his country and family and dedicated himself to growing a family business. R.D. and Mimi are loved and painfully missed.

Visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. Thursday September 13, 2007 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Longview Chapel. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday September 14, 2007 at Floral Hills East Cemetery.
