Sara Ann Kephas

January 16, 1957 — December 31, 2022

Lee's Summit

Sara Ann Kephas, 65, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri passed away on December 31, 2022 after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer since February of 2018. Sara was born on January 16, 1957 in Portsmouth, Ohio to Ralph Alfred Criswell and Ruth Eileen (Blake) Criswell. Sara attended Jasper Elementary Grade School, Jasper, Ohio (grades 1 thru 8), and Piketon High School, Piketon, Ohio (grades 9 thru 12). Beginning in her early childhood, Sara loved animals. She especially loved the ones that were homeless, needing special care and medical attention. She loved books and reading. She enjoyed watching her favorite TV show, Star Trek. Her "happy time" as she would say, was spending time at Grandpa and Grandma Blake's, playing on the farm with cousins, Cristy, and Peggy.

Sara would go on to have an amazing career in medicine. She was an outstanding friend and nurse. She started her medical career in the laboratory as a phlebotomist and after becoming a nurse, she utilized her talent and passion for caring for others. Sara was proud of her flight nursing days. She transitioned to the Emergency Room and was a Certified Emergency Nurse. She worked at St. Luke’s Emergency Room as well as the Cardiology Department at St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was the fiercest advocate for each of her patients. She cared deeply for her patients and always took the necessary time needed to make them feel safe and comfortable. She was loved by her colleagues and anyone who knew her.

Sara loved her boys and she was very proud to be their mom. She enoyed being a mother and a nurse. She loved her dogs: Sadie, Riley, and Levi and gave them the most loving home and best life they could ask for. I know her fur babies will miss her as much as we do. Sara shined a light with everyone and with every encounter she had. Even though she is no longer with us, her light will never burn out. Her colleagues at each of the hospitals and surrounding communities where she worked/ lived will miss her dearly. We take comfort in knowing that she is at peace and with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Rest easy Sara and watch over all of us with your light.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Criswell; mother, Ruth Criswell; infant son, Samuel Kephas; brother, Richard Criswell; and nephew, Aaron Criswell.

She is survived by her sister, Jayne Crabtree (David Crabtree); and sister-in-law Bonnie Criswell; nephew, Josh; and nieces, Natalie, Sallie, and Stella; her sons, Eric (Jennifer) Kephas and Tyler Kephas.
