Obituary

An admirable man, Phyllip Paul Standlea, PHD, 86, of Raymore, Mo, went home to be with his Lord on April 15, 2021, at his home with his wife by his side. A Visitation will be held on Monday, April 19, 2021 at 1pm. Funeral Service will follow at 2:00pm, and he will be laid to rest onsite at 3:00pm. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke’s Hospice Care and Hospice Offices. 901 E 104th Street. Suite N3000 Kansas City, Mo 64131.

Mr. Phyllip Paul Standlea was born November 11, 1934 in King City, Mo to Paul and Lorene Standlea.

He married Shirley Ann Pittman on December 9, 1954 at First Baptist Church of King City, MO. Phyl served in the army from 1954 through 1956 as a medical technician stationed at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Aurora, Colorado. After his service, he attended Northwest Missouri State and graduated in 1960 with a B.S. in biology. Phyl later earned his master’s degree in biology from Kansas State University Emporia in 1964. Phyl went on to earn his doctorate degree in Entomology, from the University of Missouri Columbia in 1970. Phyl used his education to educate and serve others from 1960 till 1987 with most of his teaching career at Longview Community College as a biology professor. In 1988, Phyl became the Director of Instructional of Services for the Metropolitan Community Colleges till 1996. After his retirement in 1996 he served the MCC part time till 2002.  

He is preceded in death by father, Paul Standlea, his mother, Lorene Standlea and his sister, Phyllis Johnson. 

He is survived by his wife Shirley, two sons, Douglas and Gregory of Kansas City, MO, and daughter, Sheryl of Independence, MO. Phyl had 3 grandsons, Douglas Dean, Danny, and James, and three granddaughters, Vanessa, Brandy, and Jesse. Phyl had 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. 

Phyl was a man of faith, trusting in the Gospel of Christ, living his life for his savior as he loved everyone he came into contact with. He was a humble man and faithful in all he did. He was a loving husband who cared and provided for his wife for 67 wonderful years. He loved his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren with the love of Christ. Phyl served the Church as a deacon, church treasurer, and Sunday School teacher for over 40 years. Phyl loved his Savior, his family, and the Church.
